In the year 1638, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan started building his new capital Shah Jahanabad in Old Delhi. The Red Fort was built here over 10 years as the residence for the Mughal Emperors. It served as the Capital of the Mughal Empire till 1857 when Bahadur Shah Zafar was exiled by The British.
